Pigmented Plaster: Donald Fels Paints in Puglia
Painting in Puglia 2018-23
Donald Fels began his experiments with pigmented lime plaster in Puglia in 2018.
A hyper-local raw material, plaster is created from the limestone that flows beneath the southern Italian coastal region. He obtains his studio material from the artisans of Calce Viva, where they create world-class lime plasters following an ancient and rigorous protocol. Though their products are exported worldwide, they are 30 minutes away from Studio33. Fels mixes the color into each plaster layer.
In applying the plaster to the wood, Fels works with two ancient Italian painting traditions. The fresco technique, historically applied to plaster wall surfaces, is cojoined in these pieces with traditional poplar panel painting. Thanks to its stability, poplar has been employed for Italian panel paintings for many centuries. Fashioning the pieces from sections of wood, the work refers to the modular form of altarpieces, albeit without iconography. Viewing the act of painting as meditation, Fels has spent years looking at altarpieces in Europe and Asia.
Marooned in Puglia during the Pandemic, Fels pared down his painting to applying pure pigmented plaster. Returning to Puglia in 2022, Fels was ready to open himself again to surface richness. Applied in thin overlapping layers, the plaster lends itself to manipulation, and to organic shapes. The old plaster walls on the buildings surrounding Studio33 offer a beguiling ‘gallery’ of oxidized and stained surfaces for study.
Gesso Pigmentato: Donald Fels Dipinge in Puglia
Pittura in Puglia: 2018-23
